The Wandering Room is an artist-run initiative that has been operating since 2008.
They have presented exhibitions in temporary and non-traditional spaces focussing on curating experimental and non-commercial contemporary art. They operated in Meanjin / Brisbane from 2008 – 2014 and relocated to Naarm / Melbourne in 2018.
They are currently based in Brunswick, Naarm / Melbourne. The current and
founding directors are David Creed and Angela Rossitto.
In Meanjin / Brisbane The Wandering Room presented a program of exhibitions at 99 Melbourne Street, South Brisbane; a shop space on Grey street, South Bank; and thewindow space at Ryan Renshaw Gallery, Spring Hill. They also staged a number of one off exhibitions within other gallery spaces, in shop windows, parks, on a wooden frame and within a child’s dollhouse.
In Naarm / Melbourne The Wandering Room have a more permanent location in a garage / gallery space that opens out onto Elizabeth Street, Brunswick. There theyhave curated group and solo exhibitions since 2018.
The members of The Wandering Room have also collaborated as artists. They have created work that combines humour, DIY aesthetics, handicrafts, popular culture and social commentary.
They have exhibited at Glimpse Art Space, Naarm, 2024; Counihan Gallery Summer Show, Naarm, 2021-2024; KickArts Contemporary Arts,
Cairns, 2016; The Laundry, Meanjin, 2016; Sydney Contemporary Art Fair, 2013; Griffith University Art Gallery, Meanjin 2013 and Brisbane Festival, 2012. They have undertaken residencies at Development AIR, New Zealand, 2013 and Fish Lane Studios, Meanjin, 2013.
Previous co-directors have also included Sarah Werkmeister (2008–2013), Alex Cuffe (2009-2010), Amanda Wolf (2021) and Joseph Breikers (2021).
