Maria FILIPPOW

BIO

Maria Filippow is an interdisciplinary artist and creative producer who has pioneered collaborative practice within a community context. Maria specialises in working with people who are marginalised.

As a result her artistic practice has developed in diverse environments from mental health institutions to refuges for homeless youth and isolated regional communities. Each collaboration aims to achieve the creative and personal development of the individuals involved, while shifting the social and cultural paradigms of both the collaborators and the communities in which they live. Maria is committed to passing on skills to other artists and community members while elevating the individual artworks to the cutting edge of contemporary visual arts practice.

Maria established Visionary Images, a visual culture and social change organisation, which has built a reputation of innovative exemplary practice in urban and regional environments.

Over the past 14 years her collaborations have produced artworks for highly visible, site-specific exhibition, using contemporary communication media and public space, to take art into the streets and everyday life.

Maria is the 2009 Ros Bower recipient, former Chair of the National Gallery of Victoria Youth Advisory Committee, Deputy Chair of the Community Cultural Development Board – Australia Council for the Arts and is currently a member of the Yarra Arts Advisory Committee and the Creative Director of Visionary Images.

ABOUT VISIONARY IMAGES

Visionary Images (VI) is a dynamic not for profit arts organisation dedicated to creatively engaging and developing young people with experience of hardship. Our target community is 15 to 25 year olds, particularly those who are disadvantaged by experiences of exclusion/alienation from mainstream education, unemployment, mental health issues, behavioural issues, social isolation, drug/alcohol misuse, childhood neglect/abuse, contact with the judicial system and geographic isolation.

VI uses art, communication media, design and technology to inspire and nurture positive change. We provide the resources, expertise and encouragement to assist our young people to express themselves through art, to determine their own public representation in our society’s culture, and to assist them to reach their potential.

VI’s young people are often referred by youth and other agencies. Self-referred participants are assisted to link in to appropriate services.
