Belltower Studios [Fortitude Valley] – Interview with Lindy Stokes and Chris Feld, S.C.A.M Magazine, August 1986 ( Long before the Judith Wright Centre development in 2001)
Long before the Judith Wright Centre opened in October 2001 sixteen years earlier in 1985 Belltower Designers Lindy Stokes, John Boundy, Chris Feld rented the premises and collaborated with a group of artists who had artist studios and beds on the first floor of the the old biscuit and tea factories. Together they reactivated the empty and abandoned 420 Brunswick Street building in Fortitude Valley into a lively arts and design place/space.
Events in the mid eighties included fashion parades, parties and the ‘Vision of O’Flission’ installation which opened on 1 August 1985 created by the O’Flate artist group and Belltower Design.
I was reminded of many hours spent at Belltower studios (my flat in Arthur Street next to the James Street Hotel just around the corner) while reflecting on this heartfelt interview by ‘Warren” with designers Lindy Stokes and Chris Feld ( mispelt as Reld in the article) published in S.C.A.M. Magazine (click here to read p.20-22) in August 1986.
