ARI REMIX PRESENTS: SELF-MADE, ARTIST-RUN | EXTRA | An ARI Zine Anthology Project 25 Artists, 25 Zines
Artist Run Spaces or artist-run initiatives [ARIs] emerged in Queensland/Australia and internationally in the 1970s. Throughout the 1970s, 80s, 90’s and since, they form part of an evolving DIY, participatory, and pluralising movement.
DIY [Do-It-yourself] as a subculture evolved during the punk movement of the 1970s. Much like bands who bypassed traditional means for reaching audiences through corporate music labels they created their own unique opportunities [starting record labels, recording, making albums and demo tapes, booking their own tours, and operating autonomous distribution systems and self-publishing outputs], artist run spaces bypassed traditional means for reaching audiences too. Leaving behind traditional processes through mainstream or commercial galleries systems, by creating their own collaborative spaces, sites, studios, exhibition, gallery, and performance venues. The growing zine movement in the 1970s allowed independent artists the means to represent, amplify and promote the underground punk and art scenes. These types of sites, spaces and zines altered traditional approaches to art, music, performance and publishing forever. They have enduring relevance today as a DIY ethos has evolved to encompass increasingly collaborative, participatory, and pluralising efforts in the Web 2.0 era.
