PA:
Sally Hi and thanks, why does a public archive mapping artist testimonies and artist histories about the ephemeral nature of the vibrant Queensland 1980-1990 artist-run scene matter to you?
SH:
I think this archive project is amazing and I believe it’s important these untold artist histories and stories about the 1980’s artist-runs are on the public record.
I was directly involved with several QLD artist-run projects during this era including helping to establish the Art Workers Union Qld, The Queensland Artworker’s Alliance, the Blunt Focus Cinema Collective, That Space and John Mills Himself.
It was in the John Mills himself building where I rented this space for a period of 12 months as a studio space with artists Hollie and Jennifer Chirnside.
During this time I exhibited at That Space, Aroma’s cafe and The Observatory and was involved in many group shows held in Brisbane, Qld and interstate and in the Bitumen River and That Space exchange exhibition; The Anywhere Show in Canberra.
As a Queensland based artist at the time I was working in various media including ephemeral ceramic works / found object sculpture, installations and exhibited collages, painting and prints throughout this time. My work and focus is mainly figurative. I was included in the 1986 Young Contemporaries exhibition at the IMA curated by Robert Linguard, a follow up exhibition of contemporary art by Brisbane based artists to the 1985 Peter Cripps curated exhibition Brisbane Hot also at the IMA. I collaborated with many artists working in the artist-run field during the 1980s including The Billboard Project with artists Anna Zsoldos and Lehan Ramsay, Crux ‘Little Alternatives’ group with Donald Holt, Scott Clifford, Barbara Heath, Katie White, Dale Chapman and many more.
I have been practicing as an artist for over thirty years now and during the last ten years I have been working on diverse arts and culture projects and residencies in the Scenic Rim region in South East Queensland.
