LIVING ARCHIVE, LIVING ARCHIVES: An ARI Remix Perspective 2011-2032
A living archive is often described as a dynamic collection of history, art, or stories that grows and changes through active community-use rather than sitting quietly in a static storage box. Traditional archives store old objects safely. Living archives invite people to add new memories, perform past events, and connect history to everyday life.
A ‘living archives’ as defined with added nuance and pluralisation in ARI Remix memory work describes a critical mass of community-based, independent artist/ARI collections which are largely ‘at risk’ preserved through DIY artist archivist and collaborative collecting efforts. These living archives while typically precarious form the foundation of our recuperative and recasting efforts. These resources form part of the Queensland/Australian artist-run culture and heritage movement, a movement we support, advocate and amplify.
