WHERE
WHY
NorthSite is a stimulating place of constant renewal, where artists, audiences and ideas exchange.
Housed within Bulmba-ja (formerly the Centre of Contemporary Arts) in Queensland, we are easily accessible. Situated opposite Cairns Aquarium, within walking area of the central business district, bordering the Esplanade and only 10 minutes from Cairns International and Domestic airports.
Renovated in 2018/19 by the Queensland Government, Bulmba-ja is an incubator of Far North Arts & Culture, with a strategic focus on enhancing Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander dance and performance.
Bulmba-ja is a language name meaning home or place, gifted by the Yirrigandji (Djabuguy language) and Yidinji (Yidiny language) traditional owner groups, whose input has informed the architecture of the rebuild that includes an Elder’s lounge, sky portals that tunnel tropical rains into the rainforest rock garden within the Yarning Circle and street-front veranda.
We thank, acknowledge and pay our deep respects to the Traditional Owner groups.
