CONTEXTUAL INFO
Letter about artist-run model (artel) A ROOM.
In 1984 artist Dianne HEENAN was an A ROOM collective member and in late 1984 and early 1985 before relocating to Gladstone Regional Art Gallery and Museum to work as the first woman Director in a regional gallery in Australia was instrumental in setting up the artist-run THAT Contemporary Art Space located at the rear of 20 Charlotte Street, Brisbane.
As an aside, interestingly, the Gladstone Regional Art Gallery & Museum which was also established in 1985, a community cultural initiative funded by the Gladstone Regional Council.
It is a gallery dedicated to promoting art and heritage for and by the communities of the Gladstone region and Central Queensland, acting as a focal point for the preservation and display of the region’s history and cultural heritage.
In 1985 Dianne organised the exhibition This is That for exhibition at the The Gladstone Regional Art Gallery drawn from the That Collective of artists. This important exhibition was curated by Dianne Heenan and Paul Andrew as a means for presenting new art by emerging artists from Brisbane and significantly, as an artist-run collective model useful for Gladstone artists interested in starting their own artist-run initiatives.
