NOTES
In the 1980’s, 1990s and early 2000s , living in the spectre of HIV AIDS pandemic at the time, coming out was fraught, having safe sex was vital but even fellatio was a risk, the imagination ran wild. This video art work shot on Super Eight film was slowed down to parody the 1964 silent film Blow Job directed by Andy Warhol.
Warhol’s film depicts the face of an uncredited actor DeVeren Bookwalter as he receives fellatio from an anonymous lover. It was shot at 24 frames per second, however Warhol maintained that it should be projected at 16 frames per second, slowing it down by a third
Andy Warhol’s swinging 1960’s was light years in the past when I made this film as queer activism and queer experimental art making in Sydney was becoming increasingly urgent and vital for so many.
Super 8 mm filmmaking allowed me to make performance art for film and to transfer these diaristic works into analogue video and eventually, into digital video formats for ease of presentation, exhibition, display and wide distribution.
