QUOTES

Scope and content: ‘Demolition Show’ was held in the Observatory Gallery Brisbane and at Queensland College of Art Gallery on 10-31 March 1986 and curated by John Stafford. The Observatory was located at 92-102 Little Roma Street, Brisbane City.

This collaborative exhibition addressed the probable demolition of the alternative arts space and the wider political and social implications affecting the operation of young and emerging artists in Brisbane. This exhibition was also a response to widespread building demolition and the face of the city changing during the mid 1980’s.

This collection includes videorecordings, audiocassettes, large laminated panels, large format photographs, reviews, newspaper clippings and two catalogues: ‘Demolition Show’, curated by John Stafford, and ‘Welcome Aboard’ by Mark Webb. Also includes posters, stickers, and photographs of installations including performance art and photographs documenting building demolitions occurring at the time.

A laminated copy of ‘ Buildings registered with the National Trust’ is included. Exhibiting artists included Penny Algar, Michelle Andringa, Virginia Barratt, Lindy Collins, J. Hurst, Rose Mere, Alan Owen, Wayne Smith, Mark Webb, Jay Younger, The Observatory Collective, Peter Anderson and Bryan Law.
