Call Out
Calling on all artists, writers, galleries and museums who have an interest in or a passion for feminism to come together in one multifaceted project called Contemporary Art and Feminism. CAF is an independent platform for feminist art, scholarship and activism proceeding by a series of workshop field days, public events, dispersed thematic exhibitions and a publication from March 2014 and 2015. CAF responds to the groundswell of interest in feminism’s role in the development of contemporary art and culture. The pivot point is the 40th anniversary of International Women’s Day on 8 March 2015, which also marks the 20th anniversary of Joan Kerr’s National Women’s Art Exhibition held at over 150 galleries, libraries and museums across Australia.
CAF Calendar Call Out: 40th Anniversary of International Women’s Year 2015
CAF is growing and we have some more analytic and fabulous visual arts events in the mix for the 40th Anniversary of International Women’s Year. Share your ideas, events, writings and projects with feminist art colleagues on the CAF Calendar.
The CAF calendar celebrates the 20th anniversary of Joan Kerr’s National Women’s Art Exhibition held at over 150 galleries, libraries and museums across Australia.
On 6 to 8 March 2015 we launch the Future Feminist Archive in partnership with the DAAO and selected regional partners as archival case studies. We pose the hypothetical question, ‘What forms can feminist archives take and how are can they be used by artists?’.
CAF’s well-attended events in 2014 included ‘Curating Feminism’ a conference, master-classes and exhibition (AGNSW, Sydney College of the Arts and the Cross Art Projects, 23 Oct to 7 Nov) and a day of ‘Transgressive Teaching’ (SCA, March) which considered feminism in relation to art schools, curriculum issues and teaching.

Contemporary Art and Feminism Wiki-thon
11am-4pm Sunday 26 October, Museum of Contemporary Art, Sydney
Wikipedia’s gender trouble is well documented. In a 2010 survey it was revealed that less than 13% of its contributors identify as female. The practical effect of this disparity is clear — with more articles on notable women missing when compared to Encyclopaedia Britannica, Wikipedia is clearly skewed. This represents a huge inequality in an increasingly important repository of shared knowledge. Join us at the MCA for an all-day communal updating of Wikipedia entries on subjects related to contemporary art and feminism. We will provide tutorials for the beginner Wikipedian and reference materials from the MCA library. Bring your laptop, power cord and ideas for entries that need updating or creation.
At 12pm there will be a floor talk by members of Brown Council about their work in the MCA collection and at 1pm Senior Curator Natasha Bullock will discuss women artists in the collection.
