DVAA aspires to be recognised as a regional hub and incubator for emerging and established artists, curators, arts writers, a leader in engaged artistic practice that links artists, organisations and communities across the region.
Brief History
DVAA was established and incorporated in 1983 as the Darwin Visual Arts Association. It began life through the collective efforts of artists who wanted a place to make and exhibit their work. Throughout DVAA’s thirty two year history, it has maintained a very active exhibition program exhibiting local, national and international artists and presenting artists both in formative and established stages of their careers.

DVAA is an artist run initiative committed to supporting local artists at all stages of their careers by building capacity for creative practice and fostering critical dialogue through the provision of studios, exhibition space, resources and a contemporary arts program that is relevant in the local, national and international context.
DVAA goals are focused on effectively support the development of professional practice and skills development for artists through creating comprehensive hands-on opportunities to support the realisation of quality outcomes and maturation of artistic practice, particularly in terms of curatorial refinement and professional presentation.
DVAA now in its 32nd year, has two galleries and four studios all based at the Froghollow Centre for the Arts in the Darwin CBD.

30 Years of DVAA
Throughout November 2013, DVAA celebrated thirty years as an association.
One of only two Artist Run Initiative’s (ARI’s) in the Northern Territory, DVAA supports the production, promotion and appreciation of art by local artists in all mediums, as well as increasing community awareness and participation in contemporary visual art in Darwin.
The thirtieth anniversary celebrations included a series of events throughout the month.
‘She’s a Pearler’ exhibition
She’s a Pearler – DVAA retrospective exhibition
Opening Friday 15th November at 6pm
The premier event in our celebration calendar, and in keeping with the tradition of the pearl being the 30th Anniversary symbol, ‘She’s a Pearler’ celebrates works created by Board, Committee members, administrators and volunteers from the last 30 years. We have been able to locate artists living as far as Ireland and Indonesia, and other parts of Australia.
Just some of the artists involved are Linda Joy, Jacki Fleet, Anna Reynolds, Aly de Groot, Lisa Wolfgramm, John Sounders, Chayni Henry, Cath McAvoy, Ivor Cole, Lucy Keeler, Kate Fernyhough, Ingrid Gersmanis, Talitha Kennedy, Sarah Pirrie, Janice McEwan, Gloria Richards, Tobias Richardson, Hayley West, Merran Sierakowski, Bilha Smith, Malcolm Smith, Eliza Tobin, Carol Phayer and Bill Davies.
