Hello and welcome to the NGV MABF 2022 launch of EXTRA Zine Issue  # 4 a complementary ARI Remix ‘art zines as community archives’ initiative.

Building out from participation at the NGV MABF 2020 event on the PUBLIC RECORDS: ARTIST-RUN ARCHIVES IN AUSTRALIA panel discussion held at the NGV MABF 2020 on Sun 15 Mar, 12pm–1pm 2020 this new zine and zine making artistic project is being explored as a simple and affective way to place queer/ed ‘little stories’ alongside ‘at risk’, hidden, lost or marginalized ARI cultural heritage on the public record as public histories.

This year it is hard to believe another covid-19 year has passed since launching EXTRA Zine at the NGV MABF 2021 and making three short form A5 art zines.  At this year’s art book fair  we are also delighted and thrilled to soft launch ‘ARI REMIX Presents: The EXTRA Zine Project 2022-2026 ‘ as a new string to the ARI bow with a longer form A4 zine cultural form. We aim to make and do ‘EXTRA’ zines about Australian ARI cultural heritage over the next few years.

Meanwhile the new online version of EXTRA Issue # 4 is embedded into this social memory post for your reading and sharing pleasure. We will add a freely available and downloadable version in the post real soon. Making this zine quickly during recent extreme flooding and ‘rain bomb’ events here in the South East Queensland and Northern River’s Region  has been impactful, to put it lightly. Please help with the GO FUND ME link below for The OUTPOST if you can, and/or share this post.

Hopefully we we will be participating in more fabulous zine fairs and related events this year and next with a limited edition of hard copy versions of EXTRA Zine for sale. Last years NEXTDOOR ARI Zine Fair held at Woolloongabba  was a huge success. The sale of these editioned art zines helps offset the monthly digital infrastructure costs of the ARI Remix Project.

EXTRA Issue # 4 draws on a varied collection of artists’ ephemera and presents a queer focus on an artist-run space made entirely possible by the Queensland Artworkers Alliance in 1988 and 1989. We hope you enjoy this new art zine issue…please let us know your thoughts, anecdotes and asides in the comments thread below. We wish you have a happy, safe and joyous National Gallery of Australia Melbourne Art Book Fair 2022 ahead.

EXTRA

EXTRA is an Australian networked zine collaboration building from past, present and future ‘living’ archival art initiatives. In particular, EXTRA Zine builds out from extensive ARI Remix memory work collaborations 2011-2021.

We are thrilled and delighted to launch Issue # 4 online on 16 March 2022. EXTRA Zine collaborations aim to place added emphasis on the hidden histories, marginalised narratives and digitised artists’ ephemera – ‘at risk’ artists’ ephemera – safeguarded in the personal archives of artists and artworkers. Activists, co-creatives among many others who were directly involved in the expanded and expanding Queensland/Australian artist-run ecology in the 1940 to Now temporality.

FLOOD RELIEF SUPPORT

A few words from Josie
On Monday, my friends Joanna , Beki , Robyn , Kylie and Erica lost the entire contents of their collective artspace ‘The Outpost ‘ in the Lismore floods. The contents of their studio have been completely destroyed, including all their artworks, equipment and materials. These phenomenal artists are in great need of financial support to recover, replace and rebuild all they have lost during this catastrophic event.
