BIO
Jennifer Bartholomew is a Melbourne-based artist working in a variety of visual arts and craft media including ceramics, textiles and installation. With a practice that draws upon both traditional craft and contemporary art, her work questions the boundary between these often opposed fields.
Digitally Enhanced makes play around Jennifer Bartholomew’s fascination for gloves and hand stitching. For Bartholomew, the hand crafted is both a conceptual starting point and a source of materials and techniques. Using gloves she has found or been given, she constructs anthropomorphised characters from a material once destined for the hand. With hand-worked additions, these discarded and abandoned fabric remnants take on a new life. Accidental losses, unpicking, restitching, dismembering and reassembling ignite a narrative around cast-offs.
