Building on prior arts-based queer research experiences and a longstanding interest in QuElders – Queer Trans LGBTQIA+ Elders – the ‘ELDERS: Long Lives, Well-Lived Project’ began as a pilot online documentary project in 2000-2004.
For many, it was an important community-based project. Seed funded by The Also Foundation and the Port Phillip Council, it mapped examples of the untold stories, hidden histories, marginalised narratives, ‘at risk’ ephemera and lived experiences of people in the 1900 to 2004 timeframe.
As a DIY participatory digital archive and documentary; or blogumentary as I called it at the time, in turn, it motivated the starting point for the longitudinal ARI Remix internet artwork process in 2011.
For example, Monte Punshon,
Ethel May (Monte) Punshon (8 November 1882 – 4 April 1989) was an Australian artist and teacher. She was known for her kindness to interned Japanese during WW2. This lost Super 8mm queer cultural heritage resource was retrieved, digitally preserved and recast in 2004;
