What is a shadow archive ?
On the Creation and Maintenance of a Shadow Archive open workshop
When? Friday, May 19 2017, 15.15-16.00
Where? Room NIC0541 (K3 studio) on the fifth floor of the Niagara building (Nordenskiöldsgatan 1, 211 19 Malmö, Sweden).
What? The ambiguous, ethereal forms of shadow archives may be connotatively enfleshed thusly: as non-legalist temporary autonomous zones manifesting in the cracks of capital–surviving and thriving without, and indeed in spite of, state or corporate interference. Predicated upon open voluntary curation by autonomous unions, shadow archives protect, preserve, and develop precisely that which institutions destroy: culture.
Welcome to a practical workshop providing an ethnographic overview of shadow archive functioning: the creation, deployment, curation, up-keep, as well as the maintenance of the overall operational security thereof. Special attention will be paid to the expropriation of militarized intelligence gathering strategies, now recontextualized in the service of the shadow archive.
Specifically, how shadow archivists address the following five broad domains will be explored:
Content Procurement
Source Protection
Archive Infrastructure
Intelligence Gathering: Aggregate guerrilla intelligence gathering for ensuring successful archival operations via Communications Intelligence (COMINT), Human Intelligence (HUMINT), and Open Source Intelligence (OSINT)
Archival Hardening : Operations Security (OPSEC), Counter-Forensics (CF), and Counter-Intelligence (CI)
Everyone both inside, outside, and in-between the university is quite welcome to attend.
Please do spread notice of the event widely and to anyone to whom you feel it may be of interest (students are quite welcome to attend).
