EXTRA ZINE # 51 | Remembering artist, curator, academic and author Urszula Szulakowska | A Queensland Artworkers Alliance [QAA] SPEAKEASY Advocate | by Paul Andrew
This is one of the most important projects in the Australian art-scene, of major historical value. It is unique, in fact, since I am not aware that any other region in Australia has produced a history of its own local art product in this manner. There are many factors that make Queensland different socially, politically and culturally from the rest of Australia and it has been of critical importance to record the manner in which artists related to their political environment. The mass of material gathered in the ARI Remix project is astounding. Everything is here… from very serious minimalist painting to Neo-Popist politicised work, to fashion design, the nexus with the musical scene ( an immensely important factor in the creation of the local art-world), the relation to the teaching institutions, to the dance clubs and American hip hop music in the late 1980s …. There is a great deal of information about the many different art-spaces that came and went. This is an incredible archive and there are very few like it.
