NAVA and the Code of Practice | Robyn Fernandez | Queensland Professional Development Coordinator National Association for the Visual Arts | 27 October 2023
Dear ARI Remix
Hope you are having a lovely day.
NAVA has been funded for regional professional development co-ordinators. I have recently commenced as the Queensland Professional Development Coordinator, my role is to share info/facilitate discussion to the QLD sector about the code,
I just wanted to reach out and check in to see if you wanted some further information about NAVA’s Code of Practice as there is a specific section relating to ARI’s. Alternatively we could write something for your e-newsletter/zine.
A bit of info about NAVA and the Code of Practice:
The National Association for the Visual Arts, or NAVA is an organisation which brings together the many voices of the contemporary arts sector to improve fundamental conditions of work and practice. We do this through advocacy, education and our main body of work the Code of Practice https://code.visualarts.net.au
The Code of Practice was launched in 2002 , we are currently in the 6th edition after a comprehensive consultation process over the past three years.
The code has been endorsed by the Australia Government as part of the National Cultural Policy Revive. Pillar 3, Centrality of the Artists page 53 states; Funding bodies should continue to affirm the principle that artists should be paid for their work, including through recognition of Awards, mandated rates of pay and code of practice such as….the National Association for the Visual Arts Code of Practice.
Kind Regards
Robyn Fernandez

NAVA’s Code of Practice for the Visual Arts, Craft and Design.
The National Association for the Visual Arts [NAVA] brings together the many voices of the contemporary arts sector to improve conditions of work and practice. We do this through advocacy, education and the Code of Practice.
First published in 2001, the Code of Practice has been recently updated, restructured, and significantly expanded. With a new section covering Principles, Ethics and Rights reflecting the industry’s growing concern with issues of justice, access, fair work and representation.
The Code is endorsed by the Australian Government as part of National Cultural Policy – Revive: a place for every story, a story for everyplace.
Used by artists, arts workers and organisations, the Code is a guideline for good practice standards when navigating professional relationships and making ethical decisions in work and practice. Chapter 5 of the Code specifically covers Artist Run Initiatives and sets out good practice recommendations.
NAVA’s is committed to sharing information and promoting discussions on the Code of Practice. If you would like further information, please contact the Queensland Professional Development Coordinator.
