Exhibition launch – Re-Register: Australian Women Sculptors – Friday, 1 November 2019 from 18:00-20:00 Richmond Town Hall, Melbourne
“Re-Register: Australian Women Sculptors from the Women’s Art Register” is the inaugural Women’s Art Register Artist-In-Residence program.
The exhibition will be opened by Councillor Danae Bosler, Mayor of the City of Yarra, with remarks by Caroline Phillips, Secretary of the Women’s Art Register.
In this multi-sited project, artist Julia Boros creates new work that draws on her investigations into the 1978 Women’s Art Register archive; “Profile of Australian Women Sculptors 1860-1960”. This research – photographs, slide kit and publication – was conducted by Bonita Ely and Anna Sande, in response to the lack of representation of women sculptors in the art history canon. The project was exhibited at the 1978 Mildura Sculpture Triennial, and is now held in the collections of the Women’s Art Register.
In response to this groundbreaking research, Julia Boros has developed a suite of textile based works and an artists’ book, on view at Richmond Town Hall (Level 1), and an accompanying archival display in Richmond Library.
