Artist Hiram To b. 1964 – d. 2017, Hiram To (杜子卿) was an artist who worked in conceptual-based installations. He was also a writer in the visual arts, popular culture, film and fashion. Born in Hong Kong to Chinese parents, Hiram To lived in Scotland and moved to Australia in 1984 with his family and was an active participant and activist in Brisbanes experimental art artist-run scene until 1995. During this prolific early period of Hiram’s career the artist was vigilant and forthright around socially engaged art, artist collaboration, moral rights, artist fees and artist contracts for artists through his direct and impassioned engagement with the 1980s and 1990s Brisbane artist-run scene; including his ongoing participation with ARIs including John Mills National, That Contemporary Art Space, Breathing Concrete, AXIS Art Projects, Bureau, AGLASSOFWATER and the Queensland Artworkers Alliance, his activism with same sex social justice, LQBTQIP+ Human Rights and with the promotion of the diversity of asian australian contemporary art many years before APT (Asian Pacific Triennale) started at QAGOMA in 1993. Hiram relocated to live and work in Hong Kong in 1995. In May 2014 Hiram spoke eloquently at the Queer Histories Symposium in Darwin about his life’s work with archives as art and about the significance for artists and activists in queering the archive.
