November 2019 Featured Artist Social Memory – “William on the Dancefloor” by Edwina Shaw

Each month we feature a vibrant artist’s social memory contribution about Australian independent, DIY artist-run initiative (ARI) heritage, past, present or future, accounts that touch on a vivid time in an artists direct lived experience; the social history, the feeling and mood of place, the feelings of belonging or not belonging, the political context and about the collectivism that often informs and affects Australian artist-run collaboration.

This November we feature an artist memoir by author Edwina Shaw who has recently edited the book Bjelke Blues. During the past year Edwina  and we at ARI Remix were talking about William, a mainstay at artist-run openings in and around Brisbane City throughout the 1980s, he could cut some hectic moves on the dancefloor too, William was one of many Brisbane identities at the time. Edwina decided it was time to reflect and to write about William and share the story here.

A wee reminder…

ARI Remix is for the greater measure a labour of love, it is only possible through the kindness, generosity, collaboration  and volunteerism of so many artists. If you like this memory and would like to read more, then share the love, donate a wee amount, share the link with your community of care  and help us grow and expand the living archives – ARI Remix Living Archives & Social Memory Project- A Queensland Remix 1970 to Now – we need dollars to help preserve this online living archive and Web 2.0 artwork.
